Principal's Message

Monsignor J. S. Smith School serves over 500 students from Kindergarten to Grade 9. Elementary students are from the communities of Douglasdale and Douglas Glen with Mahogany joining for junior high. Despite the large population, this school has traditionally always found room for new Catholic students moving into the area. The 45 people on staff and over 200 parent volunteers work hard to make each day a positive learning experience for each student.

Our purpose is to identify and nurture each of God’s gifts to every child. Our strong academic program is complemented by an excellent Fine Arts program. This includes Art and Music at every grade level and Drama for our junior high students. Our Band program begins at grade 4, (grade 4-5 recorders, grade 6-9 instrumental), resulting in a very capable Senior Band. Many of our graduates find success in the Bishop Grandin High School bands. We also offer a complement of courses with a focus on technology.

Monsignor J. S. Smith School is a Catholic Community of Caring school. This means that each child is considered as a gift from God and is special to us. Our mission is to teach children not only to recognize and develop their gifts, but also to use those gifts as God intended, helping others and making the world around them better. To this end the school has many opportunities for students to participate in charitable works and to reflect on their connections with their God. As well, the school is closely connected with St. Albert the Great Parish. Regular liturgies and Masses are held in the school during the year. Each year we transport every student in the school to St. Albert the Great Church for our School Opening Mass.

To round out the programs, Monsignor J. S. Smith School has exceptional Physical Education, Recreational Leadership and Sports programs. Additionally, Hockey Canada has teamed up with the Calgary Catholic School District/Monsignor Smith School to offer an exciting optional program for our students through the Hockey Canada Skills Academy.

It is our goal to ensure that we are doing the best job possible to provide a wonderful teaching and learning environment for all students and staff. If you are a Catholic family living in one of our designated communities, we look forward to welcoming you to our school!
